
Abram de Swaan is emeritus distinguished research professor of social
science of the University of Amsterdam, founded and chaired the
Amsterdam School for Social Science Research (1987-2007). For many
years, De Swaan wrote columns for NRC/Handelsblad. He taught a.o. at
Cornell University, Columbia University, Science Po en het Collège de
France. For his essays he receivedthe triennial national PC Hooft award
(2008). De. Swaans most recent boeks, which appeared in a dozen
languages are Words of the World (2001), The Killing Compartments
(2015) and Tegen de vrouwen (2 019), English transl, Against Women; The
resistance against women’s liberation to be published late 2025.
